Oil Painting: Happy Family

This is a commissioned piece I finished yesterday. It was probably one of the fastest paintings I have ever done with oil paints. I'm not exactly sure on how long it took me to complete, but I believe it was approximately 10-15 hrs. In the future I will try harder to keep track of the time it takes for me to finish one piece. The photo of painting was taken by my client, who kindly sent it to me after I told him that I was unable to get a good photo of it because I was in hurry to deliver it to him.

Verna the Disease

Verna is a character I created based on the Greek mythology Pandora's Box. She represents disease which is one of the several evils that was released from Pandora's box. More detailed description on Verna is stated in image to the left. Below I have some more sketches that I did before I came up with the finalized version of Verna,

Figure sculpture

I wanted to do this post for a while now, but for some unknown reason I procrastinated. This was the sculpture I made with the recycled clay from the relief sculpture I spoke about before. This was my first full body sculpture I've have ever done. It was a little more challenging than I had expected. Since I already felt comfortable with drawing figures, I thought that building a sculpture of it should be easy. With the help from my professor I realized that an important information to know when starting a 3-D piece was to build up the mass of the object, such as the bust of the figure and everything else was about shaping and details.

Aesop's Fables: The Fox and The Crow

This was a two part illustration where I depicted the beginning of story how the fox met the crow sitting on branch with a slice of cheese in its mouth and the climax where the fox convinced the crow to open her mouth to sing and the cheese dropped and he caught it.

Bad Owners

Acrylic on Illustration Board
This illustration was inspired by Magritte's paintings of unexpected relationships and using the idea of "memorable but believable." I chose to depict the abusive relationship of owners and pets, however in this image it is the giant squid that is the owner while the human is the pet.

Nude Study- Pastel Colors

acrylic on canvas paper
Typically I refrain from posting my figure drawings, because I'm afraid I would end up filling the whole site with class drawings; however I made an exception for this one because I felt it carried a bit more substance than my usual figure studies. Instead of the same old charcoal rendering of a figure in blank space, the addition of color really adds a emotion to piece. Although this painting is not entirely finished and requires minor tweaks here and there, I am pleasantly pleased the overall drawing and colors.

Relief Sculpture: Camel and Taj Mahal

Today's post is a little different from my previous ones. For my sculpture class, my first project was to do a relief sculpture and the subject matter was anything I wanted. Since I was bored of drawing human faces all the time, I decided to try something different. I wanted to do something involving an animal and architecture so I chose the camel and Taj Mahal. The last time I did a relief sculpture was back in my sophomore year of high school, but at the time I was very disappointed with the results. However this time I had a great time, because I had better understanding of how to use my tools with my medium and my greater knowledge of form.

Although I had really great experience and was quite happy with the results, I decided to destroy the piece. Are you shocked? Well there really was no good reason to do so, except I was being cheap and I had no place to put my artwork. The board and clay weighed a ton and I was almost certain that even if I kept it would get destroy sometime in the future by accident. But no worries, all my efforts were not in vain. In fact I'm already reused the clay and board for a current sculpture project. I'll show the results of it very soon.

Here's a picture of my artwork and I before I said my goodbye.

The Big Bang Theory Caricatures

In the top I have four caricature illustrations I did on the cast of The Big Bang Theory. I started watching the show during my winter break which was two months ago. All the characters on the show had very quirky personality, so I had a blast drawing them (who knew being unproductive can actually be useful).

An Innocent Heart

A story of a young lady named Frances Wright who arrived to New York from Europe in 1818. She was fond of the people in New York and impressed with her surroundings. She wrote letters to her friend back in Scotland describing her wonderful days in the new land. Her letters were eventually published as a book entitled View of Society and Manners in America. In the book she described how women had the freedom to marry whom ever they wish and how people dressed more modesty than those in Europe. Critics, however, attacked her for being too one-sided, because she failed to talk about the disgraceful trading of slaves in America and that arrogant personalities of aristocrats.
